My name is Katherine Brief, and I grew up in League City, just a stone's throw away from the iconic NASA Mission Control. Living so close to space exploration, I couldn't help but develop a profound fascination for science. Entering into STEM related clubs and Robotics teams to fuel my curiosity for engineering. In 2015 I served as one of the electrical engineering team leads and aided my high-school robotics team, the robonauts, to obtaining their first World Championship victory. After Graduating with honors from Highschool, I was incredibly fortunate to secure an internship at NASA, which only intensified my passion for technology and led me to be accepted into Texas A&M universities' Engineering program.During my time at University my hometown was struck by an unprecedented storm, Hurricane Harvey, which flooded my town under 3 feet of water. I could do nothing but prepare care packages from my student accommodations but I felt a change of heart for my academic path. A professor and mentor of mine introduced me to Urban and Regional Planning and I was determined that I could make a difference. I changed my majors and pursued Urban Planning with a focus on Infrastructure, Flood mitigation, and Emergency Disaster Management. Now, I constantly seek to improve my cross-functional skill-sets and knowledge base through furthered education and certifications. I hope to find more career paths that will allow me to service and protect communities and business' from natural hazards and create new and improved opportunities for human ingenuity through the built environment.
